"Can't Stop" is a song by American rock band Carmine Hot Chili Peppers from their eighth studio album, Past the Manner (2002). It was released every bit the third single released from the album on February 3, 2003. The vocal was the ring's eighth number one on the United states of america Billboard Modernistic Stone Tracks chart, where it spent three weeks topping the chart, and peaked at number 57 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Tin can't Stop" performed moderately well on international charts likewise equally on the Billboard Modernistic Rock Tracks and Mainstream Rock charts.

Composition and lyrical denotation [edit]

The song is instrumentally composed in iv/iv standard time and in the key of E modest. The verse plays twice before the bridge, likewise as the chorus. During the bridge, Frusciante plays sparsely in a reggae style, only strumming on the up-vanquish. Following the bridge, Frusciante utilizes a fuzz (Big Muff Pi by Electro Harmonix) in his solo. He also makes all-encompassing utilize of a tone-curve.[1]

Lyrically, "Can't Stop" is a prime number case of the band's occasional utilize of writing lyrics to an established rhythm, rather than rhythms to established lyrics.[ii] Kiedis writes in his typical circumlocutory fashion. Withal, the predominant theme of cultivating an inner, personal energy (evidenced in the championship and the final line: "This life is more than just a read-through.") can exist understood in almost every line. The verses are addressed to the listener (or peradventure to himself), in an instructional tone, with references to Kiedis's own life, as well every bit citing the inspiration of Defunkt ("Defunkt, the pistol that you pay for") and Julia Butterfly Colina ("J. Butterfly is in the treetops"). The span marks a slight departure, equally Kiedis suggests he had temporarily forgotten this philosophy, and looks to a new girlfriend to help himself back on his feet.

Music video [edit]

The Marking Romanek-directed music video for the unmarried, released on January 24, 2003,[three] features all four of the band members doing seemingly random and excessively abstract actions such every bit holding many water bottles or attempting to residual buckets on their heads. It begins with the camera swooping through a xanthous tube to Anthony Kiedis, wearing glasses, and is after followed past the foursome running through a hall with light fixtures attached to their backs. The ring engages in various activities, such as wearing a behemothic purple hippopotamus mask, playing with condom balls, jumping, abstruse scenes with boxes, buckets, water bottles, trash cans, flight through the air, pinkish foam peanuts, plants, playing guitar in a room full of empty blue chairs/room with lamps turning on and off.

At certain segments of the video, one can run across guitarist John Frusciante playing an orange Toronado and a silvery Fender Stratocaster,[4] which is different his manner due to the fact that he only plays vintage guitars (both guitars beingness under five years of age). Frusciante later explained he was instructed to play the guitars by managing director Mark Romanek since they composite well with the color scheme used in the video; he also noted that he was never actually playing the guitars.[five]

Inspiration for the video was attributed to Austrian artist Erwin Wurm, as indicated by the sign at the terminate of the video.[half-dozen] The lighting was positioned in club to provide a make clean-cut, contemporary atmosphere which would integrate with the video's concept.[half-dozen] Orange was chosen to be the backsplash color by Romanek. His creative mitt attempted to mirror Wurm's abstruse "One Minute Sculptures", by having the band perform random scenes, which seem to fit no purpose. However, in retrospect, they were non intended to exist anything more than capricious deportment, fitting with the ideas expressed in Wurm's work.

Reception and chart operation [edit]

The song itself is distinct, especially when in comparison to the various other tracks on By the Fashion. Some consider the song to be amongst the only true punk/funk sounds on the unabridged album, along with "Throw Away Your Television".[vii] [8] "Tin't Stop" was considered to be "energetic" and melodically encompassing, past combining textured, melodic, and funky themes together into one.

The song was the Chili Peppers' seventh number ane on the Mod Stone Tracks chart, and 2nd from the anthology By the Way. It besides peaked at number 57 on the Billboard Hot 100.[nine] Regardless of the moderate recognition it received on the Billboard Hot 100, the song is a live functioning staple.[10]
